The Pyralis Effect (Doctor Who: The Companion Chronicles) The Pyralis Effect by George Mann

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This is one case where an audio definitely benefited from when/how I chose to listen to it. Had I followed my more usual practice of listening while out walking in the sunshine, I probably would not have appreciated the atmosphere of this audio quite so much. Because I chose instead to listen at night, in the dark, I was able to really appreciate the creepiness and claustrophobia of the sound design and the voice acting. The first half was actually quite hair-raising.

Plot-wise, this one is odd - the Doctor is very important in providing the ultimate motivation for the plot, but he and Romana don't actually do much of anything at all to affect the actual course of the story. As long as things are being scary, and the adrenaline is pumping, you don't much notice, but it's still not entirely satisfying. Definitely a case where the acting and sound-design save a fairly mediocre script.
