Audio Review: Death in Blackpool
Death in Blackpool by Alan BarnesMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
I'll admit that when I heard that Lucie Miller's last story would be a Christmas special, I was a bit worried that the need to fulfill the requirements of a Christmas special would make for a less satisfying send-off for Lucie than the character deserved. I shouldn't have worried - Alan Barnes weaves a story following on from plot threads established in The Horror of Glam Rock and The Zygon Who Fell to Earth that ticks all the Christmas boxes, but still delivers a good exit story for Lucie.
Death in Blackpool manages the trick of being both funny and sad, with the humor keeping it from being a total Christmas downer. Lucie Miller wants to spend Christmas with her family in Blackpool. After an unexpected happy reunion with her Auntie Pat, everything starts to go wrong. The whole thing ends with a very moving scene, in which Lucie decides that she can't continue travelling with the Doctor any longer.
