Amanda Marcotte has a good review of Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy over at Pandagon. It does a particularly good job of explaining what Pullman was getting at in the rather weird and awkward third book of the series.
If they ever make a sequel movie to The Golden Compass, I wonder if they'll even try to deal with any of these issues.
