Sci-Fi Season on BBC Radio

From Paul Cornell's twitter feed, I discovered that BBC Radio 3, 4, and 7 are kicking off a season of science fiction radio programming airing over the next couple of weeks.

I'm particularly interested in checking out The Scarifyers (starring Terry Molloy and Nicholas Courtney, who've done great work on Doctor Who in TV and audio format), The Sofa of Time, and the adaptation of Iain M. Banks's State of the Art (which I think was adapted by Paul Cornell).

If you haven't already heard them, I recommend the new Blake's 7 series. It won't please all fans of the original series - they've very deliberately kept some elements of the original show and jettisoned others - but it's well worth a listen. I posted a review of the first episode, Rebel, a while back.

You can stream all of these programs over the internet on BBC iPlayer when they're broadcast or up to 7 days afterward.

Woot. The geeks have indeed inherited the earth - not just the Whoish/B7/Banks-derived stuff, but a smattering of original SF-related drama to go with it. Rich pickings indeed.

Ha! Cadmium2 first with the Iain M Banks news in September LAST YEAR! There are times when I hear Kryten in my head saying "Smug Mode".

Completely apropos of nothing, I was just recently on Nicholas Courtney's website, and it mentioned The Scarifyers. Since I also love Terry Molloy's voice acting, I decided I'd try checking out the new BBCi thing.

I listened to the first episode of "For King and Country" yesterday on the iPlayer, and I'm enjoying it so far. Nicholas Courtney sounds like he's having a heck of a lot of fun - he's playing a character who's a lot less straitlaced than the Brigadier.

It's justifiable smugness! I'm pretty sure that I first heard about the adaptation of State of the Art from Cadmium2.

I'm just glad that I haven't missed the actual broadcast yet. I'm not all that diligent at checking Radio 4's schedules, so half the time I don't find out about stuff that I wanted to hear until after it's gone out.

It sounds like Lovecraft on crack, which can be a wonderful thing (says the person who can sing much of Shuggoth on the Roof). But humor doesn't always translate.
