Dead batteries aren't much fun

Though it's not as widely documented a technique as jump starting or push starting a car with a dead battery, repeatedly cranking the starter and muttering, "Please please please just start!" actually worked for me twice this morning. Call it plead starting.

I now have a shiny new battery, and with any luck will not need to employ this technique again.

The short-cut is calling AAA. They're pretty prompt and pretty good at getting the thing moving (speaking from too much experience).

Yes, I have a similar service from my insurance company, and they've both jump started me and changed flat tires on more than one occasion. Sometimes I'm just stubborn. ;)
