Spent a chunk of this evening setting up a Windows XP virtual machine for my father-in-law so that he can run ancient word processor Ami Pro on his new Windows 7 laptop. (He has some files relevant to a textbook he's working on in Ami Pro format.) Everything went swimmingly - VM creation, Windows installation, Ami Pro installation. And then the darn thing wouldn't print. I have found some indication that this is a known problem with Ami Pro in some versions of XP, and have sent my father-in-law some suggested workarounds. I hope they work - I have a reputation as the family IT services provider to maintain.
On the plus side, I got to let my three-year-old nephew "help" by ejecting the AmiPro installation disks, and I got to read to him from Curious George Goes to the Library. I haven't quite figured out how to explain the concept of a "virtual machine" to a 3 year old, though. Perhaps when I can do that, I can call myself a master technical communicator.
