So, Older Nephew likes to sit on his parents' bed while I read to him. And Older Nephew likes to eat strawberries. This had what really should have been foreseeable consequences...

Me: Oh, no! We got strawberries on the pillowcase!
Older Nephew: We can hide it! (Starts turning the pillow over, with strawberry sticky hands.)
Me: No.
Older Nephew: We can!
Me: We *can*, but I don't think we *should*.
Older Nephew (Thinks hard about this): Why not?
Me: Because if mommy and daddy see that the pillowcase has strawberries on it, they can clean it, and it won't be a problem. But if we hide it, then they might not find out until later, and it might be a problem.

So, we go back to reading the book, and I think he's forgotten about the pillowcase. Until his mother arrives...

Older Nephew (At top of his voice, holiding up pillowcase): Look, Mommy! I got strawberries on your pillow!

Of course, his mother is entirely unfazed by this.

I suppose that if I'm going to be the kind of babysitter who lets the kids eat strawberries in bed, it's good to also be the kind of babysitter who can reinforce the message that when you make a mess, it's a good idea to tell your parents about it.
