It's Indian Jujube season

So, there was a mystery fruit tree in our backyard that I had tentatively identified as an Indian jujube. It produces sort of pear shaped fruit that start off green, then go yellow, and finally darken to a reddish brown. They average about the size of a golf ball, with some a bit larger and some smaller, and have a single pit in the middle. I've seen them for sale in local farmers markets very occasionally, where they're sometimes also called Chinese dates, but I'd never tasted one until today, when I picked a few off our tree.

They have slightly dry-ish crisp flesh that tastes a lot like a tart apple, but also with a honeyed note to it. Not bad. I'm tempted to try chopping up a few and cooking them in oatmeal with cinnamon.

*googles* Mmmm, sounds nummy. Also, apparently they're traditionally eaten stewed in India, so cooked in oatmeal they would work well, and would add a good dose of vitamin C.
