Got off work, went for a nice stroll, had a nice dinner in Palo Alto with Daniel and his parents, who are in town for the summer. Driving back along University Ave., I reach an intersection where a driver is stopped for no reason I can determine. I stop too. Car behind me doesn't stop. Crunch.

The good news: I don't appear to be injured, although I got enough of a jolt that I'll be a bit surprised if I don't have a sore neck or shoulders tomorrow. The car is driveable. The other driver, although he did try to persuade me to settle this without involving our insurance companies, was very cooperative and gave me all the information I needed.

The bad news: Well, my car's gonna need a new bumper for sure. And if I have to skip lifting weights tomorrow morning because I have whiplash, I'm gonna be pissed. Grrr.

Ouch. I've been in that kind of collision before, and while it could be a lot worse, it definitely sucks.

If you partake of booze at all, now might be a good time. Muscle relaxant and all that.

"Drink up."
"Why three pints all of a sudden?"
"Muscle relaxant, you'll need it."
"Muscle relaxant?"
"Muscle relaxant."
Arthur stared into his beer.
"Did I do anything wrong today," he said, "or has the world always been like this and I've been too wrapped up in myself to notice."

I went for the Arthur Dent-approved remedy of a Nice Cup of Tea. Plus some dark chocolate and a couple of ibuprofen. I'm saving the scotch for after I'm done dealing with the insurance company.

At least this time you had a car between you and the car that hit you? This is progress of sorts, but not of the sort I would prefer.

After the accident, as I was waiting for the adrenaline to subside enough to allow me to drive home, I texted Daniel to let him know that I'd be later than anticipated. I started with "Got rear-ended on University Ave," and then quickly amended that to "My car got rear-ended on University Ave," because the distinction seemed important.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it was a Stanford student who hit me this time. I'm putting the universe on notice that I'm not actually trying to collect a complete set of vehicular mishaps with undergrads of California's elite universities.

Oh, no. I'm glad you're mostly OK, and that sucks about the car! :(

Thanks! I'm feeling better than I expected to this morning - no pain, though I'm just the tiniest bit stiff. But I've done worse to myself by sleeping in an odd position. (Knock on wood. I've heard stories about people who thought they were fine just after the accident and then had something turn up later, so I'm being cautious about declaring myself fine. But I did go to the gym and lift weights this morning, so I can't be too damaged.)

The car will be a pain the butt to get fixed, but at least I won't be paying for it. ;)
