I appear to have missed the spammers' notice for the time being. Probably, though, as I type these very words, they've got me in their sights. :p

They seem to target particular posts of mine repeatedly, while ignoring the vast bulk of them - I suspect that there's some keyword targeting involved. Perhaps in the spirit of scientific enquiry, I will create a post that contains nothing but the words "sex", "calories", "weddings", and "handbags". If my hypothesis is correct, it would be a spam magnet.

The two I got targeted this entry, which contains (so far as I can tell) none of those words, but does have the feature of likely having been linked to from elsewhere and having a decent googlerank (or so I would guess).

The posts of mine that have been most widely linked have gotten no notice whatsoever, and I don't talk about sex and calories and handbags at all. There was one post talking about my godfar's wedding, but other posts talking about other weddings have been left alone while posts talking about the Kalevala have gotten lo these many spams.

It's a mystery.

The idea that people who are interested in the Kalevala might be a previously untapped gold mine of advertising revenue pleases me. Well, except for the part where it results in spam on my friends' journals.

As if to prove a point, I just got a spam this morning on a post that contained no sex, calories, weddings, or handbaggery.

Sadly, every time I lock the comments on a frequently-spammed post, they pop up elsewhere. It's like playing whack-a-mole.

On the other hand, it's been kind of a fun tour through old posts of mine, many of which I had entirely forgotten about. So, um, silver linings?

There is indeed no stopping the spammers. My goal is just to slow them down - I start to feel glum when the volume of spam comments starts to significantly outnumber the volume of real comments.
