Overriding the defaults

Just got to meet in person a developer that I've been working on a small project with for a couple of months. Based on our interactions in the bug tracking system, I'd developed a mental picture of a soft-spoken, extremely polite, and fiercely intelligent young man. I was rather delighted to discover that I've been dealing with a soft-spoken, extremely polite, and fiercely intelligent young woman.

Delighted, but also a bit embarrassed at how often my brain defaults to "programmer=male" even though I know better.

No matter how much I work at it, I never quite get over some of those defaults, so I've just trained myself to be happy when I'm wrong more than bothered because I was wrong.
