There's this enormous Doctor Who questions meme going around. I thought I'd prepare for my trip to Gallifrey by answering it.

1. When did you start watching?
1983ish or so.

1a. Why?
I was randomly channel flipping, came across PBS airing an early Tom Baker episode, and was hooked within about 5 seconds.

2. What was your first episode?
It was either "Ark in Space" or "Revenge of the Cybermen". It definitely took place on Space Station Nerva. I seem to remember their being a Wirrn in it, which would make it "Ark in Space", but I also seem to remember Tom Baker uttering the line, "I don't want to lose my arm - I'm rather attached to it," which I think comes from "Revenge of the Cybermen".

3. Which episodes have you seen?
A smattering of Hartnell and Troughton, most of Pertwee, all of Tom Baker and Peter Davison, most of Colin Baker, a sprinkling of McCoy stories, The 8th Doctor TV Movie, and everything from the new series.

3a. Favourite?
Hard to pick. From the "classic series", I'd probably say "Genesis of the Daleks" or "The Deadly Assassin". From the new series, "Dalek" and "Blink".

4. Are your friends/family interested in the show?
Some of my friends are. My husband is not a huge fan, but has learned to be interested in the show enough to keep from dying of boredom when I go on about it.

5. Which Doctor is your favourite?
On TV, it's a close running between Tom Baker and Christopher Eccleston. On audio, Paul McGann wins hands down, although Colin Baker is also fab on audio.

6. Which Doctor is your least favourite?
I'd probably have to say Hartnell. Which shouldn't be taken as me saying that he isn't sometimes marvellous, but his version of the Doctor spends a surprising amount of time being grumpy and useless, from what little I've seen.

7. Which TV companion is your favourite?
When I was a child, I wanted to be Liz Shaw when I grew up, because she had two Ph.D.s and wore hot boots. I'm also very fond of both Romanas.

8. Which TV companion is your least favourite?
Hmmm...I remember not much liking Turlough when I saw his stuff, though I might feel differently now. In general, though, I prefer companions who actually want to be on the TARDIS.

9. Do you listen to the Big Finish audios?
Do I ever! (I only started about a year ago, so I'm way behind, but I'm possibly more enthusiastic about Big Finish right now than I am about the TV series.)

9a. If so, which is your favourite?
"The Chimes of Midnight". Or maybe "Scherzo". I think Rob Shearman is a genius.

9b. Also: which Big Finish companion is your favourite?
Charley Pollard. Though it's not a fair contest, because I've yet to hear Evelyn or Erimem or Hex. (See what I said above about being way behind.)

10. Have you listened to any non-Big Finish audios?
I've heard the first Audiovisuals audio, "The Space Wail", though I'm not sure if that counts as non-Big Finish, since it's mostly the same people. I've also been working my way through an amateur-produced Doctor Who drama called "Terror of the Arctic" made by Super Sound Studios.

10a. If so, which is your favourite?
Don't really have a favorite.

11. Have you read any of the novels or short stories?
Yes. I was a regular reader of the New Adventures from about '95 to '96, until I went to graduate school and the novels' North American distribution went to hell just about simultaneously. I've picked up a couple of the Eighth Doctor books and read a smattering of the New Series Adventures.

11a. Have you written any of the novels or short stories?
No. I did toy with putting together a proposal for the NAs back when they were running, but I never felt like I grokked the 7th Doctor well enough to do it. (Back when I was reading the NAs, the only 7th Doctor episode I'd seen was "Dragonfire".)

11b. Which is your favourite?
Novels: Kate Orman's The Left-Handed Hummingbird. Short stories: Steven Moffat's "Continuity Errors" from Decalog 3 (I think).

12. Have you read any of the comics?
A few.

12a. You guessed it - which is your favourite?
There was this kind of cracktastic 9th Doctor comic from DWM with a sea on an alien planet that made people hallucinate. That was pretty cool.

13. Do you watch any of the spinoffs (e.g. Torchwood, Sarah Jane Adventures)?
Yes.

13a. Which is your favourite?
Tough call - at the moment I'd have to say The Sarah Jane Adventures, but Torchwood's season 2 might change my mind.

14. Is there any particular episode/book/audio/comic you desperately want to watch/listen to/read?
The Big Finish audio "The Girl Who Never Was", but I have about 10 previous 8th Doctor adventures I need to listen to first. I'm rather strangely looking forward to the "Planet of the Ood" episode of season 4.

Fandom
1. Do you write fanfic for Doctor Who?
I've dabbled. (But never drabbled.)

1a. If so, post a snippet of a work-in-progress (or several)!
Haven't really got anything excerpt-worthy at the moment.

2. Do you create Doctor Who icons?
Nah. I'd like to, but I lack the Photoshop chops.

2a. Let's see a sample!
N/A

3. Recommend a fanfic/icon/fanvid/fancomic/fancreation!
Nimon: A Celebration. It must be believed to be seen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-8np3aw-Cw

4. Have you been to any Doctor Who conventions?
I'll be attending my first in less than 48 hours.

5. Have you ever dressed up as a Doctor Who character?
Yes. I put together a not-terribly-successful Tom Baker costume one year for Halloween.

6. Do you own any Doctor Who merchandise?
Apart from the pile of books, DVDs, and audios? I have an itty-bitty toy Dalek and a sonic screwdriver.

7. Are you a fan of Russell T Davies?
Absolutely, though I don't think everything he does is brilliant. He'll always have my admiration and gratitude for managing to bring back Doctor Who as a smashing success. I quite like most of the episodes he's written for the show, and adore a few of them, but he's got a few clunkers, and I really wish he weren't so cavalier about scientific plausibility or internal consistency in his plotting.

7a. Steven Moffat?
Heck yes. I've even loved all of his non-Who work that I've seen.

7b. Paul Cornell?
Yeah. Didn't think much of "Scream of the Shalka" (I loved its overall concept for the Doctor, the Master, and the companion, but thought the actual plot was dumb), but his work for the New Adventures novels, the Big Finish audios, and the new series has all been top notch.

8. What say you to Season 6b?
Anything that allows beloved Doctors and companions to have more adventures is a good thing.

9. The UNIT dating controversy?
Everyone wanted to date Liz Shaw. What's the controversy?

10. The Blinovitch Limitation effect?
I try to avoid meeting myself, because of the embarrassment this usually causes.

11. Multi-Doctor episodes?
The plots are always a bit wonky, and by any objective standard they're kind of crap, but I like them anyway. Especially "The Five Doctors". I cherish a secret hope that the new series will do one with the 8th Doctor in it.

12. What's your favourite Doctor Who technobabble?
"The backlash backblast will bounce back and destroy everything!" I don't even remember what episode that comes from.

13. Have you watched other TV shows exclusively because of the presence of Doctor Who actors?
Yes.

14. Have you met any of the actors?
Not yet, but I may well this weekend, unless I'm struck by a terminal bout of shyness.

14a. Travelled to any filming locations?
Not intentionally. I've been to the Eiffel Tower, and I've seen all those buildings in New York City that they got plate shots of for "Daleks in Manhattan".

15. What do you think of The Curse of Fatal Death?
I think I really need to see it. (I know! How dare I call myself a Moffat fan?)

16. Do you have any fannish opinions that you think are fairly unpopular?
I have a goofy little bit of personal fanon about the Doctor's wife having been a CIA (that's Celestial Intervention Agency) agent, who went on a mission that went horribly wrong, and put not only her, but the Doctor's entire family, in danger. The CIA decided to cut their losses and hang her out to dry. The High Council refused to intervene. Outraged, the Doctor stole a TARDIS and tried to save her and the rest of his family. In the end, he was only able to save Susan, and got himself exiled from Gallifrey.

17. What's your favourite pairing?
Eighth Doctor/Charley. In fact, Eighth Doctor/just about anyone. I used to have a soft spot for Ninth Doctor/Rose, but the 'ship wars have kind of put me off it.

18. What pairing(s) won't you touch with a really long pole?
Well, a sufficiently well-written story could probably sell me on just about anything, but Owen/anyone would be a hard sell.
