Brewster for one is not surprised. (Apparently Milton was one of his inspirations when writing "His Dark Materials" - as the avowed anti-CS Lewis, Pullman looked to a Gnostic view of things.)

Oh, yes - If I remember correctly, there are parts of The Subtle Knife that practically read like Milton fanfic.
